4-day Private Camping or Lodge Safari in Southern Tanzania – Bush meets Forest

Explore two of the smaller parks of Southern Tanzania with Tanzania Safari Bug on this 4-day private camping or lodge safari. Combine interesting 4×4 game drives in Mikumi National Park with a walking adventure in the Udzungwa Mountains. This itinerary is ideal for safari enthusiasts and active travelers with a limited amount of time.

Mikumi – also known as ‘Little Serengeti of the south’, stands out for its great multitude of wildlife while an excursion to the Udzungwa Mountains is perfect for those who are interested in exploring nature up-close. Mikumi is easily accessible all year around, however, we would not recommend a safari to Udzungwa during the wet season as the walking paths become slippery.

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 01: Dar es Salaam – Mikumi National Park

In the morning, meet & greet in Dar es Salaam with your qualified guide and begin your journey! An early start is advisable to avoid the morning traffic. Once you leave Dar es Salaam behind, the drive gradually follows the Tan-Zam-Highway and soon the lesser-known Uluguru Mountains will appear as a splendid backdrop while you continue to Mikumi. The highway cuts directly through the national park and sometimes wildlife can be seen along the road. Arrive at your accommodation for the night and spend the afternoon at your leisure.

  • Meals: Picnic-Lunch, Dinner
  • Campsites are available inside and outside the park
  • Lodge options inside: Stanley’s Kopje Tented Camp, Vuma Hill Tented Camp
  • Lodge options outside: Angalia Tented Camp, Tan Swiss Lodge
Day 02: Mikumi National Park

After breakfast explore Mikumi National Park during a full day game drive. This national park was established in 1964 and can be visited all year round. The Mkata flood-plain in the heart of Mikumi is the park’s main feature. With its open grassland it provides the perfect opportunity to easily spot large mammals such as buffaloes, elands, elephants, giraffes, hippos, reed-bucks and warthogs. Predators, including spotted hyenas, leopards and lions, can also be seen. The mixture of savanna and mountain ranges offers an incredible backdrop – especially when the sun sets and everything is lit in golden hues.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Picnic-Lunch, Dinner
  • Campsites are available inside and outside the park

Day 03: Mikumi Region – Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Are you ready for your walking adventure? Udzungwa is only a short drive from Mikumi and it is a paradise for nature lovers! This national park can only be explored by foot with a park ranger. Several walking trails invite you to discover this biodiversity hot spot with its numerous endemic birds, primates and trees. Follow one of the many trails and enjoy amazing views, learn more about the traditional use of plants or swim below the waterfalls. The park is also known for its two endemic primates – the Udzungwa Red Colobus and the Sanje Mangabey, so keep your eyes peeled!
